The lens follows your head as you move around. For one, this webcam offers a face-tracking system that's pretty cool. But there are a couple of things to like. We've established that the design, install, and performance are subpar. Tweaking the cam's settings failed to resolve audio or video problems. It didn't matter if I was using the device at home over a 3-megabit-per-second connection or from a coffee shop that throttles the speed to something more like 1 Mbps the video and audio quality were exactly the same. A less common complaint: The microphone added a slight distortion effect as well. The SPC 620NC suffers from the same ailment as most webcams: You can hear just fine when the caller is up close to the webcam, but when your caller moves away more than a few feet the audio drops out suddenly. With a lamp placed right next to the webcam pointing toward the subject, the SPC 620NC's video looked a little better, but still not as crisp as you'd want for video calling.Īudio quality also lagged behind that of the LifeCam VX-5000. Whatever the LifeCam VX-5000 does to adjust the lens for low-light conditions is obviously missing here. Even though the SPC 620NC 1.3-megapixel resolution sensor matches the 640-by-480 resolution of the LifeCam VX-5000, the video looked muddy in comparison to that of Microsoft's cam.

If the setup is a little drawn-out, and the bundled software is lacking, the actual video chat performance is probably the biggest disappointment of all. Unlike the LifeCam 2.0 software included with the LifeCam VX-5000, VLounge doesn't give you an option to edit video clips-that might be a good extra to add to a future release. I e-mailed a video clip using Windows Mail, and captured several clips without any problems. Most features, however, worked as expected. The app's something of a letdown, however it's unintuitive and crashed a few times in Windows Vista Ultimate. VLounge allows you to capture video snippets and take photos.

There is one application, called VLounge, that you can install from the CD.

The 620NC doesn't even come with any instant-messaging clients-you have to download them yourself. By contrast, we tested the LifeCam VX-5000 and started using it with Windows Live Messenger in Vista without having to install any software at all.

Once you've finally gotten it positioned, you have to install the SPC 620NC's drivers from the included CD and reboot. Worse still, when I was testing the SPC 620NC with a Sony VAIO AR790 widescreen notebook, I was afraid that the device's troublesome plastic hinge would scratch my screen. If you clamp the camera onto your monitor or laptop screen, it doesn't exactly stay firmly in place nearly as well as the better-designed LifeCam VX-5000. If you do stand it on a desk, it's likely to tip over, thanks to the cam's extreme lightness in relation to its substantial USB cord. Your color options are humdrum black or silver, and the plastic stand feels cheap-it's really just a tripod that rests on your desktop or clamps to your laptop screen. The SPC 620NC looks like webcams from circa 1999. Somehow Philips didn't get the memo about how design can drive demand. Unfortunately, the video quality is so muddy that you'll be overpaying if you buy this cam, especially when, for the same money, you can buy the Microsoft LifeCam VX-5000, which offers video nearly as sharp and bright as that of our $99 Editors' Choice, the It's agreeably priced, at just $50, and it works with most instant-messaging clients. shores, just in time for lazy summer video chats with your friends. late last year, the Philips SPC 620NC has made its way to U.S.
