During this period of blind negligence, the Admiral decides to use a top-secret N.A.S.A. Led by the worst Admiral in film and television history, Admiral Hadley, the characters call a conference of five generic people (including an angry, eye-patch-wearing soldier doing a bad Bale/Batman impression) to hypothesise on the causes of such mysterious events. The film under hot rocket fire, for instance, begins with several oil rigs going missing. This effect derives from a mixture of incompetent writing and a budget that limits the potential of these hack writers. After finishing both films, I am unsure on whether hours, days or weeks have passed during the alien or oceanic dinosaur invasions, and am left baffled as a result. One common element between this films has already come to light, however, in that the concept of time and place is utterly bizarre and muddled. While being far more technically adept than AVH (opting out of reusing the same shot several time), Atlantic Rim is far less enjoyable as it strives to be cool under the glorious shadow of the Jaegers we prefer. Great dialogue continues as one of the first lines blurted out of the mouth of our hero, Red, is ‘I’ll kick your ass so fast, you won’t know what hit you!’, which is fairly anti-heroic as well as the most unimaginative action line you are ever like to hear, perhaps more at home in a 90’s teen movie. That the film only runs for 85 minutes would suggest that scenes like this are merely included to supplement a shit script that can’t even reach the regular feature running time. There are moments within the film that see Red, played by David Chokachi, explain the entirety of a previous scene’s events to Jim (Treach) and Tracy (Jackie Moore) because they weren’t there. On the one hand, paying no-name actors saves some budget, on the other, characters have nothing to say apart from unemotionally commenting on what the audience is currently witnessing, like weird news anchors.

What exacerbates this more so, though, is the fact that Greene offers up possibly the worst acting committed to Atlantic Rim, which is saying something when we compare his performance to that of David Chokachi’s, whose career peaked when it began with Baywatch, or Jackie Moore’s, who more recently appeared as a background hooker in HBO’s Westworld. Obviously Greene has never been as established an actor as those mentioned above, but his career has at least been fairly respectable. It’s common for stars like Wesley Snipes, Steven Seagal, John Travolta or the previously esteemed Nicholas Cage to sink into obscurity, appearing in dire direct-to-DVD features when they are lucky, however, none have plunged to the depths of mockbuster madness. Graham Greene holds quite long body of work, his filmography including The Green Mile, Die Hard: With A Vengeance, the dreaded Twilight Saga and an Academy Award nomination for his role in Dances With Wolves. Unlike the Alien Vs Predator ripoff, The Asylum managed to draw in a somewhat of a better known star. Hunter, is of the so bad it’s good variety of mockbuster. I would like to say that Cohn’s film, like AVH: Alien Vs.

The filmmakers come to the conclusion that simply changing the ocean, and thus the title, is quite enough. Jared Cohn directs this $500,000 Pacific Rim knockoff that has also been known as Attack From Beneath, Attack From The Atlantic Rim and From The Sea before resting finally on Atlantic Rim, the most overt duplicate title going and therefore most bankable. Fortunately, we are still but scraping the surface of the mockbuster ooze that collects at the bottom of the cheapest of buckets after already filtering through the blockbuster sieve and resting, for the most part, undisturbed in a unnattractive quagmire.

Would you look at that? It’s The Asylum film company again with yet another bargain bucket gem.
